Tokyo Motion Point Researchers (Iwasawa Bros. + Horikawa Junichiro + Miyama Yu + Nakata Kazue)

Testing AI predictions and human experience

The work of the Tokyo Moving Point Researchers (TMPR) interacts playfully with the city, traversing the digital and physical, the high-tech and the handcrafted, and the perspectives of people and objects. TMPR was formed in 2023, bringing together various members with backgrounds in design, programming, and communications. At CCBT, the group opened Moving Point Observation Station (35.39.36.02/139.42.5.98), a research base where AI and humans collaborate to observe the world. It developed a project comparing AI predictions with physical human experiences.

SnoezeLab.

A new kind of sensory room for the seven senses

Snoezelen multisensory rooms began in the Netherlands in the 1970s as a form of therapy for people with severe developmental or intellectual disabilities, and are available in Japan mainly at welfare facilities. SnoezeLab. comprises Hashimoto Atsuko, a specialist in making Snoezelen rooms and developing digital content for infants and special needs children, and Ichikawa Nozomi, whose sustainable team building focuses on mothers. For CCBT, SnoezeLab. worked with people with disabilities and mothers of disabled children, proposing and developing an inclusive environment not only in terms of the physical space, but also through how it was run.

SIDE CORE

Rediscovering our relationship with urban environments from the perspective of the street

Featuring Takasu Sakie, Matsushita Tohru, and Nishihiro Taishi, SIDE CORE launched in 2012. Harimoto Kazunori also participates in the collective as a video director. It develops projects in public space through the lens of street culture. Unfolding both indoors and out, its practice explores ways to expand expression in urban space with the aim of changing mindsets, intervening in interstices, and broadening expression and actions.

Synflux

Exploring digital and fashion futures

Synflux is a speculative design laboratory using cutting-edge technologies to design fashion for the planet. It aspires to attain a cyclical society where we can express our creativity freely while being considerate of nature and the planet, and to make next-generation design systems. It undertakes research and development for optimizing manufacturing and fashion design processes, and evolves platforms for making clothing sustainably in collaboration with various brands and manufacturers.

Tomo Kihara + Playfool

Exploring the mutual evolution of humans and AI through a game

This is a collaboration between Kihara Tomo and Playfool (Dan Coppen and Maruyama Saki). With a focus on play, their practice in Japan and overseas centers around designing tools that foster creativity and making artistic interventions that engage with urban space and society. First shown at CCBT in 2023, Deviation Game ver 1.0 has since appeared at the experimental games festival Now Play This and Ars Electronica.

ELECTRONICOS FANTASTICOS!

A contemporary festival with a float and household appliance musical instruments, powered by renewable energy

Led by the artist Wada Ei, this project brings together various collaborators to resurrect disused electrical appliances as new kinds of musical instruments that gradually form an orchestra. It is currently active in five cities in Japan and via an online laboratory as a participatory art project with close to a hundred members. To date, numerous types of appliances have transformed into musical instruments, from cathode-ray tube TV sets to electric fans, extractor fans, video cameras, air conditioners, and telephones. Participants draw on their creative ingenuity to reconfigure the original function of these electrical appliances for musical purposes, which is then channeled into fantasies that conjure up “electromagnetic native music” and festivals from these obsolete forms of technology.

contact Gonzo

Can we truly share sensations? Performers and viewers jointly experience physical contact

Founded in 2006, contact Gonzo currently comprises four members: Tsukahara Yuya, Mikajiri Keigo, Matsumi Yakuya, and NAZE. Across improvised performances, films, photography, and magazines, its practice applies a bucolic theory of the sublime rooted in physical contact. Its past work has involved shooting lemons and other fruits at speeds of 100 kilometers an hour using an original contraption. Major solo exhibitions include Physicatopia (2017, Watari-um, Tokyo).

Asami Kazuhiko + God Scorpion + yoshidayamar

A hybrid exhibition taking place in urban and digital spaces

The project team featured the media artist God Scorpion, curator yoshidayamar, and extended reality producer Asami Kazuhiko. The exhibition AUGMENTED SITUATION D was held at CCBT and on the streets of Shibuya in 2023, utilizing the augmented and virtual reality creative platform STYLY. Harnessing extended reality technology, it now expands into the city with hybrid and scalable arts and culture.

Tokolo Asao + Hiramoto Tomoki

A traditional Japanese checkered pattern in light and shadow, created by digital fabrication

The artist Tokolo Asao and spatial designer and architect Hiramoto Tomoki worked with the video designer Iguchi Kota for their project at CCBT in 2022. These same three were also behind the incredible spherical checkered pattern made with aerial drones at the opening ceremony of the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. At CCBT, the team used 3D printing to make the kumi-ichimatsu-mon checkered pattern into spheres and created FORMING SPHERES, a light and shadow installation presented as part of Yebisu International Festival for Art & Alternative Visions 2023.

Inukai Hiroshi and Developlayers

A new kind of sports day, created and played collaboratively through technology

Devised by esports producer and game designer Inukai Hiroshi, Future Undokai (Sports Day) has been held all over Japan since 2014. This iteration of the event centers on a team of “developlayers” who develop and play competitions, rules, and sports day formats through workshops and a hackathon. At CCBT Compass, the publicly recruited developlayers create a Future Undokai (Sports Day).
