See, Touch, Hear: Playing by Sensing is an exhibition by 2023 CCBT artist fellow SnoezeLab. The exhibition is accompanied by workshops and a talk.

Return to a Child’s Mindset and Experience an Inclusive Environment.
A laboratory for new experiences regardless of age, ability, or nationality!

Snoezelen rooms began in the Netherlands in the 1970s as a form of therapy for people with several developmental or intellectual disabilities, and are now available in Japan mainly at welfare facilities. Through light, sound, scent, vibration, tactile materials, and other elements, these special spaces stimulate the senses, creating an environment in which the user, caregiver, and space work in tandem. See, Touch, Hear: Playing by Sensing is an exhibition based on the Snoezelen room concept.

From infants to people with intellectual disabilities and older adults with dementia, some people are unable to express verbally what they are thinking. Such a person might be right next to you. This exhibition features three Snoezelen rooms that stimulate the seven senses (the five basic senses of touch, sight, hearing, smell, and taste as well as the vestibular sense and proprioception) to create forms of nonverbal communication, and more inclusive environments in which people can fully express how they feel and understand one another better.

The importance of inclusive environments is widely known today, but realizing them requires multifaceted approaches to how we support people’s everyday lives. At this talk, SnoezeLab. is joined by three guests to discuss how we can achieve more inclusive environments for raising children.

SnoezeLab. is the pairing of Hashimoto Atsuko, a specialist in making Snoezelen rooms and developing digital content for infants and special needs children, with Ichikawa Nozomi, whose sustainable team building focuses on mothers. Hashimoto and Ichikawa had previously worked together on an entry for the Cabinet Office’s Social Business Plan Competition, and formed SnoezeLab. upon their selection at an CCBT artist fellow. It participates in running projects with people with disabilities and mothers of children with disabilities, and develops not only physical environments but also environments that are inclusive across the entire way in which they operate.

CCBT Art Incubation Program

One of CCBT’s core programs, the Art Incubation Program provides opportunities for creative talent to undertake new projects and makes those processes accessible to the public, facilitating forms of artistic expression, exploration, and action that change our city for the better. Selected through an open call, five artist fellows will act as CCBT partners, developing their projects, making the creative process public, exhibiting the results, and holding workshops and talks.

IISE「Immersive Inclusive Sensory Environment」

Hashimoto Atsuko

sensory rooms producer and researcher / Representative Director, SnoezeLab.

Hashimoto Atsuko specializes in planning and developing digital content for young infants and special needs children, and creating Snoezelen multisensory environments and other kinds of sensory rooms. After graduating with a degree in broadcasting from Nihon University College of Art, she completed a master’s degree in pedagogy at Tokyo Gakugei University, and then completed coach training with the Netherlands-based WorldWideSnoezelen. Since 2013, Hashimoto has run courses and created spaces, especially at child welfare and education facilities. Her other positions include president of Relax’Creation project, inclusive education project director at NHK Educational, and adjunct instructor at Kyoritsu Women’s University.

Ichikawa Nozomi

Founding Director, Polaris NPC; President, Mowen LLC; Director, Happy Community Connections Practices Research Institute

After graduating from junior college, Ichikawa Nozomi worked for an IT company. She left her job to raise a family, and then became involved in circular forms of child-care support, such as amigo and Setagaya Parenting Network. In 2011, she shifted her focus to reforming working styles and practices, and her business plan was selected in a competition run by the Cabinet Office to bolster community employment opportunities. This resulted in the nonprofit corporation Polaris, which she founded in 2012. In 2016, she stepped down as the head of Polaris to become founding director and shift its management to a followership model. In January 2023, Ichikawa founded Mowen LLC to promote experimental projects rooted in her more personal interests. She is currently engaged in a new project for DEATH Festival and more.

Akiyama Masaaki

Director, General Incorporated Association Burano

Akiyama Masaaki graduated with a degree in business from the University of South Alabama, and then joined Recruit (today, Recruit Marketing Partners). After he left Recruit, he was elected as a member of the city council of Koga, Ibaraki, in 2015. In 2016, his severely disabled daughter was born, prompting him to launch Burano, Japan’s only facility offering multipurpose day care services for severely disabled children and also vocational support for mothers. Akiyama strives to find ways to connect the local community with medical care options as well as families and children with severe mental and physical disabilities.

Nagamine Reiko

General Incorporated Association mogmog engine

A former top salesperson at Shibuya 109, Nagamine Reiko is involved with projects that seek solutions to social welfare issues while raising a child with Ohtahara syndrome (early infantile epileptic encephalopathy), a very rare form of refractory epilepsy affecting fewer than a hundred people in Japan. She jointly launched mogmog engine, and runs Snack Toromi, a community for children with dysphagia (a condition that makes swallowing difficult) and their families. In partnership with educational research institutes, cooking experts, and others, Nagamine has developed inclusive food that is easier for people to swallow. Under the motto of “eating in your own way,” she works to create a more inclusive world through food.

Otsuki Masami

Chief Community Officer, Polaris inc.

After graduating university, Otsuki Masami worked in sales for six years, before leaving her job to concentrate on raising a family. She came into contact with various ways of working among the people she met in her community, and started engaging in volunteer activities with her child. She has experience as a postpartum helper with the child care support group amigo, as the director of the nonprofit Setagaya Child Care Network, as well as working as nurseries and play centers. Otsuki co-founded Polaris in 2012 and was appointed president in 2016. She is involved with team building and running communities where people work in various ways and roles that allow them to show out their true qualities.
