Lecture by Machiko Kusahara, a researcher in the history of media art and visual culture, who will look at the activities of media artists such as Maywa Denki along with the history of art & scenes in Japan and abroad. You will learn the context of media art history.
Video art, technology art, media art… The history of art and technology that has continued since the 1960s has undergone diverse changes up to the present day due to artists’ ideas, a critical look at technology, and the technology of the times, along with the demands of society regarding technological innovation. The history of art and technology has undergone diverse changes up to the present day. How can Maywa Denki be positioned in this history of media art? In this related talk, Machiko Kusahara, a media art researcher and winner of the 24th Japan Media Arts Festival’s Award of Merit, will lecture on Maywa Denki’s activities in the history of media art and the important points that remain as milestones. Even those who are familiar with Maywa Denki’s works and live performances will surely discover something new.
In recent years, there have been major changes in the cultural policies that have supported media art. Professor Kusahara, who has taught at universities in Japan and abroad and trained many young artists, will also share many hints for CCBT’s activities!
Machiko Kusahara (Researcher and Curator of Media Art and Visual Culture History)
Since the early 1980s, she has devoted herself to the development of media art and international exchange through exhibitions, lectures, writing, and education as a curator. He has curated exhibitions at the Tsukuba Science Expo, the World Design Expo, and the 21st Century Mirai Experience Expo, prepared for the opening of the Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Photography and the NTT InterCommunication Center [ICC], founded Digital Image, an independent association of computer graphics artists, and published Computer Graphics Anthology” (Bibliography, 1989), exhibiting Japanese works abroad at IMAGINA, Berlin International Film Festival, and other festivals, and juries at the Ars Electronica Festival and other open competitions in Japan and abroad. His dissertations on the field of media art, including artificial life and device art, as well as on the history of Japanese visual culture, such as Shashie and Gento, have been used in university education in many countries. He has taught at Tokyo Polytechnic University, Institute of Advanced Media Arts and Sciences (IAMAS), University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), and Waseda University.
