In conjunction with Future Ideations Camp Vol. 9: Fiction←Technology→Imagination, this keynote lecture is by Fujikura Asako, an artist who uses digital technology to examine cities and infrastructure, and conjure up imaginary spaces and connections that are otherwise not visible in reality.
Starting October 10, Civic Creative Base Tokyo (CCBT) hosts Future Ideations Camp Vol. 9: Fiction←Technology→Imagination, an intensive workshop program about theater and technology at Tokyo Metropolitan Theatre in Ikebukuro. Continuing the partnership from last year, the camp is co-produced with the Performing Arts Festival: Autumn Meteorite Tokyo. It treats theater as a simulation device enabling us to temporarily share and test situations and relationships that do not yet exist by relying on the audience’s imagination. Participants in the camp explore ways to expand these possibilities through technology.
In conjunction with the camp, Fujikura Asako gives a public keynote lecture on October 11.
Fujikura’s work offers new perspectives and interpretations on real-world landscapes through the use of video, computer graphics, and installations. In her practice, technology is not merely a means of expression, but a medium enabling us to imagine what does not exist, and therein discover new meanings and relationships.
In the lecture, Fujikura discusses the background and thinking behind her practice, drawing on past works and research to explore how technology spurs the imagination and gives rise to fiction. The event is open to all.
My work has focused on observing cityscapes and infrastructure in order to explore how we can perceive and connect with the vast spatial expanse that extends out from and surrounds the immediate, local environment. What is it to treat the city not as a closed space, but one that extends outward to what lies beyond and far into the distance? What is it to create ways of making this invisible expanse perceivable while remaining where we are? I will discuss my artistic practice in these terms, reflecting on my past research and work, including moving image, computer graphics, and installation.

Performing Arts Festival: Autumn Meteorite 2026 Tokyo
Autumn Meteorite is a performing arts festival centered around the Tokyo Metropolitan Theatre in Ikebukuro, Toshima-city. The festival’s Artistic Director is playwright and novelist Toshiki Okada, who has also taken up the position of Artistic Director, Performing Arts of the Tokyo Metropolitan Theatre this fiscal year 2026.
The festival’s core missions are:
- To foster the creation of new artistic work
- To promote international exchange
- To develop the next generation of performing arts professionals
The festival aims to create opportunities for audiences to experience the “here and now” of the Japanese and global performing arts scenes through a diverse range of programs—making them more accessible, encouraging direct, personal connection and resonance, inviting discoveries of various realities, and opening new perspectives from which to reconsider the world we inhabit. For the 2026 Edition, Autumn Meteorite Tokyo once again returns with three main categories: the “Performance Program,” comprising 13 diverse works of performing art from Japan and abroad; the “Non-Performance Program,” consisting of lectures, workshops, and other events; and the “Hello and Welcome (Attendee Support)” program, which provides support throughout the festival.
