Dystopia Land, from Theme Park to National Land: How Close Can Fiction Get to Reality?
Summary
In the worst of times, how can people live happily? Taking this question as its starting point, the project considers ways to survive in a society beset by many problems through fiction and humor, building a vision of the future with members of the public that mixes fact and fiction. The project will hold interviews and lectures with sociologists, life scientists, and other experts, and present an immersive and complex installation allowing visitors to experience what it is like to live in a dystopia. Through these activities, the project aims to foster public resilience to future uncertainty.

Etsuko Ichihara has been creating artworks that interpret Japanese culture, customs and beliefs from a unique point of view, and present new, technology-based approaches. Thanks to their strong impact, these works have been introduced across a wide range of media all over the world, such as newspapers and TV programs, radio programs, and magazines. Ichihara’s works were included in the Excellence Award at the 20th Japan Media Arts Festival, Entertainment Division in 2017, and in 2016, chosen for the INNOvation program from The Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications. She won Honorary Mention (Interactive Art＋) in PRIX Ars Electronica 2018 and received a STARTS Prize Nomination in the same year. She has recently presented her works in exhibitions such as ʻRoppongi Crossing 2022ʼ at the Mori Art Museum.
CCBT Art Incubation Program
One of CCBT’s core programs, the Art Incubation Program provides opportunities for creative talent to undertake new projects and makes those processes accessible to the public, facilitating forms of artistic expression, exploration, and action that change our city for the better. Selected through an open call, five artist fellows will act as CCBT partners, developing their projects, making the creative process public, exhibiting the results, and holding workshops and talks.
