AUGMENTED SITUATION D is a “city-roaming” cross/extended reality (XR) exhibition created for the 2022 CCBT Art Incubation program by producer Asami Kazuhiko, artist God Scorpion, and curator YOSHIDAYAMAR. Following its development and presentation at CCBT, the project found a further life in other cities across Japan. This talk is held as part of SOCIAL INNOVATION WEEK 2026, discussing these practices and exploring how art and technology can expand the city.

*Conducted in Japanese

AUGMENTED SITUATION D is the world’s first city-roaming XR exhibition, which transforms the city itself into a gallery. Originally held over twelve days from March 10, 2023, across an area with a radius of approximately one kilometer around Shibuya Station, the project involved a workshop with ten artists, architects, and designers, as well as local children from Tokyo, together creating artworks utilizing XR technology (an umbrella term for virtual and augmented realities). Subsequently, the same format was rolled out for events in three other cities: Kanazawa, Hiroshima, and Osaka. In August 2026, a book, Augmented Situation D: How we augmented Shibuya, was published, documenting the specific methods used to create the city-roaming XR exhibition.

This talk features Saito Seiichi, who served as a mentor for the 2022 CCBT artist fellows. In addition to introducing examples of past practices, Saito discusses the current state and future potential of the intersection of urban space, XR, and civic participation. As a pioneer of that field, Saito shares insights and draws connections with CCBT’s core philosophy of civic creativity, by which the creative possibilities of the public are unlocked within the city.

To embody its mission of “Discovery,” “Development,” “Co-creation,” and “Collaboration,” Civic Creative Base Tokyo [CCBT] conducts “CCBTx”—an initiative involving partnerships with diverse collaborators across various fields, both in Japan and abroad.

SOCIAL INNOVATION WEEK 2026

A social and cultural design festival showcasing new perspectives on the future

A constantly changing society. A constantly changing world. A constantly changing city. A constantly changing Shibuya. The times must always deal with change, the pace of which is accelerating. Do we simply passively stand on the receiving end of these waves of change? Or do we take part in driving and shaping that change? Together with everyone who aspires to create change, SOCIAL INNOVATION WEEK 2026 fosters a space to share new perspectives, mindsets, and values, and to pioneer the future.

Dates: November 2 (Mon) – November 8 (Sun), 2026
