Project
TOKYO [UN]REAL ESTATE
Summary
This project collected data on living spaces in Tokyo, creating a digital archive of the diverse lifestyles in the city through 3D scans. Documenting and examining a life-sized version of humanity, the project comprised a new iteration of modernology (a form of urban sociology in prewar Japan) that decoded the shifts and characteristics of contemporary society. The project exhibition presented the results of these efforts, showcasing the data it compiled of real Tokyoites’ lives as well as the various lifestyles evident from that data. It also featured displays of manga, games, extended reality, moving image, and other examples of works that utilized the 3D data of actual homes. In addition, the project released the 3D data on a dedicated website. By exploring approaches to digital archiving and new possibilities for collaboration, the project attempted fresh uses of living spaces in the digital age.
CCBT Art Incubation Program
One of CCBT’s core programs, the Art Incubation Program provides opportunities for creative talent to undertake new projects and makes those processes accessible to the public, facilitating forms of artistic expression, exploration, and action that change our city for the better. Selected through an open call, five artist fellows will act as CCBT partners, developing their projects, making the creative process public, exhibiting the results, and holding workshops and talks.
