architectural historian / Professor, Waseda UniversityCity

Nakatani Norihito is a professor in the School of Creative Science and Engineering, Faculty of Science and Engineering, Waseda University, specializing in architectural history, historical engineering, and the history of habitat building. After studying early modern carpentry manuals and sukiya-style architecture and tea rooms, he broadened his scope to research preexisting urban forms, and led a project to revisit and document the transformation of rural houses originally visited by Kon Wajiro. This then evolved into the Millennium Village Project, a study of villages with a continuous history spanning a thousand years. In 2013, Nakatani traveled across Asia, the Mediterranean, and Africa to survey civilizations inhabiting regions along the boundary of the Eurasian Plate. He advocates for the study of the history of habitat building and conducts tangible research on the sustainable survival of humankind. His major publications include Future Communes: Forms of Home, Family, and Coexistence (Inscript, 2019), Moving Earth, Forms of Dwelling: Travels along Plate Boundaries (Iwanami Shoten, 2017), and Severalness Plus: City, Architecture, and Human Beings as the Cycle of Things (Kajima Institute Publishing, 2011).Last Updated: 2026.09
