Open Base Saturdays are held at CCBT every first Saturday.
The fourth talk in the series features the architectural historian Nakatani Norihito.

Open Base Saturdays is a spin-off of the CCBT Meetup series of events that explores the concept of civic creativity through CCBT’s annual theme. Each session invites a guest from a different field to examine the annual theme from various angles.

The fourth edition’s guest speaker is architectural historian Nakatani Norihito. The talk will focus on Nakatani’s theory of preexisting forms. Preexisting form theory holds that the inherent scales of nature, cities, and architecture significantly impact our lives today. The talk will examine the preexisting forms in Harajuku and, while considering the unique character of the area, reflect on CCBT’s 2026 theme of civic fashion.

Following the talk, Base After Hours offers an informal forum for taking a closer look at CCBT’s Tech Lab, chatting with other attendees in the Base space, asking the guest further questions, and reading books.

Audiences are welcome to bring their own drinks, sandwiches, and snacks to Open Base Saturdays.

Open Base Saturdays

This Meetup series is held on the first Saturday of every month. It invites guest speakers with different expertise and perspectives to explore the essence of CCBT’s annual theme from various angles. Guests are selected based on recommendations from previous guests, forming a relay of speakers. After the talk, audiences can chat at the After-Hours Base event held in the Base space on the third floor of CCBT.

Nakatani Norihito

architectural historian / Professor, Waseda University

Nakatani Norihito is a professor in the School of Creative Science and Engineering, Faculty of Science and Engineering, Waseda University, specializing in architectural history, historical engineering, and the history of habitat building. After studying early modern carpentry manuals and sukiya-style architecture and tea rooms, he broadened his scope to research preexisting urban forms, and led a project to revisit and document the transformation of rural houses originally visited by Kon Wajiro. This then evolved into the Millennium Village Project, a study of villages with a continuous history spanning a thousand years. In 2013, Nakatani traveled across Asia, the Mediterranean, and Africa to survey civilizations inhabiting regions along the boundary of the Eurasian Plate. He advocates for the study of the history of habitat building and conducts tangible research on the sustainable survival of humankind. His major publications include Future Communes: Forms of Home, Family, and Coexistence (Inscript, 2019), Moving Earth, Forms of Dwelling: Travels along Plate Boundaries (Iwanami Shoten, 2017), and Severalness Plus: City, Architecture, and Human Beings as the Cycle of Things (Kajima Institute Publishing, 2011).
