Etsuko Ichihara has been creating artworks that interpret Japanese culture, customs and beliefs from a unique point of view, and present new, technology-based approaches. Her works were included in the Excellence Award at the 20th Japan Media Arts Festival, Entertainment Division. Taking this question as its starting point, the project considered ways to survive in a society so beset by problems through fiction and humor, working together with members of the public to build a vision of the future that mixes fact with fiction. Based on multilayered research on science and human history, the exhibition featured an installation that portrayed a portrait of a dystopian Japan in a parallel universe. The exhibition also included a series of lectures by experts on the body, religion, the nation-state, and citizens\u2019 lives in a dystopia, and workshops in which participants envisioned and created dystopian lifestyles and futures. Thanks to their strong impact, these works have been introduced across a wide range of media all over the world, such as newspapers and TV programs, radio programs, and magazines. Ichihara\u2019s works were included in the Excellence Award at the 20th Japan Media Arts Festival, Entertainment Division in 2017, and in 2016, chosen for the INNOvation program from The Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications. She won Honorary Mention (Interactive Art\uff0b) in PRIX Ars Electronica 2018 and received a STARTS Prize Nomination in the same year. Year Selected 2024 Project Dystopia Land Summary In the worst of times, how can people live happily? Taking this question as its starting point, the project considered ways to survive in a society so beset by problems through fiction and humor, working together with members of the public to build a vision of the future that mixes fact with fiction. Based on multilayered research on science and human history, the exhibition featured an installation that portrayed a portrait of a dystopian Japan in a parallel universe. The exhibition also included a series of lectures by experts on the body, religion, the nation-state, and citizens\u2019 lives in a dystopia, and workshops in which participants envisioned and created dystopian lifestyles and futures. Focusing on the paradoxical positiveness inherent in the act of predicting and envisioning the disasters that await, Dystopia Land aspired to give us resilience in the face of an uncertain future, and provide opportunities to think about better alternatives. Presentation Profile Ichihara Etsuko Artist Etsuko Ichihara has been creating artworks that interpret Japanese culture, customs and beliefs from a unique point of view, and present new, technology-based approaches. Thanks to their strong impact, these works have been introduced across a wide range of media all over the world, such as newspapers and TV programs, radio programs, and magazines. Ichihara\u2019s works were included in the Excellence Award at the 20th Japan Media Arts Festival, Entertainment Division in 2017, and in 2016, chosen for the INNOvation program from The Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications. She won Honorary Mention (Interactive Art\uff0b) in PRIX Ars Electronica 2018 and received a STARTS Prize Nomination in the same year. She has recently presented her works in exhibitions such as \u02bbRoppongi Crossing 2022\u02bc at the Mori Art Museum. CCBT Art Incubation Program One of CCBT\u2019s core programs, the Art Incubation Program provides opportunities for creative talent to undertake new projects and makes those processes accessible to the public, facilitating forms of artistic expression, exploration, and action that change our city for the better.
