New artworks created with AI, digital fabrication, and augmented realityCreatively transforming Tokyo to make new experiences through art, design, and technology<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Beginning with the exciting new work by Tokolo Asao, Hiramoto Tomoki, and Iguchi Kota (all contributors to the much-discussed drone display at the opening ceremony of the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games), exhibitions of projects by CCBT\u2019s artist fellows will include Tomo Kihara and Playfool\u2019s original game co-created by humans and artificial intelligence, and an augmented reality event held in the streets of Shibuya. The collective SIDE CORE will also present a new work in its video series about urban change.
Utilizing AI, digital fabrication, and AR, these exhibitions and works that appear in the city enable a wide range of experiences at the intersection of art and technology.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

CCBT Art Incubation Program<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One of CCBT\u2019s core programs and the largest artist fellowship in Japan, the Art Incubation Program aims to enable new artistic creativity and R&D that inspires the world with what Tokyo can do. CCBT\u2019s artist fellows receive funding support for new projects, use of CCBT\u2019s facilities, and expert advice as they develop their work and then present it in Tokyo. Alongside this, fellows give workshops and lectures at CCBT, share their creative process publicly, and serve as partners helping to build CCBT.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

AI-generated images and text have recently attracted a lot of attention due to their high quality that is difficult to distinguish from what humans can create. This project, however, uses AI not to generate something new but as a device for identifying whether or not an image was made like that in the past, and then deviating from that. The data accumulated from participants over the course of six workshops is reflected into the works in the exhibition, helping to develop the AI. Through AI-human competition and co-creation, the project attempts to pioneer a whole new realm of expression that humans have yet to explore.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

An augmented reality exhibition in the streets of Shibuya featuring eight Japanese and international artists<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Augmented Situation D<\/em> is an interactive exhibition in which visitors enjoy works on display at CCBT and the streets of Shibuya through their phones. When visitors use their phone to read the AR marker on the works at the venue and at locations around the city, art appears that fuses the real and the virtual. The exhibition explores the theme of festivals. Utilizing AR technology to conjure up a festive spirit in the urban space of Shibuya, the project pioneers a new kind of art festival held in the city as well as fresh possibilities for artistic expression through extended reality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The highly anticipated latest entry in this series about urban change, a video installation exploring urban landscape and underground space<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is the latest entry in the rode work<\/em> series of video works that view forms of urban change (post-disaster reconstruction, urban development, etc.) from the POV of a skateboard. Ongoing since 2017, the highly anticipated newest work deals with the underground parts of the city. Though rarely seen in our everyday lives, Tokyo\u2019s subterranean spaces actually form the foundational infrastructure of the city and have continued to increase as the capital has developed. Presented both outdoors and underground in the city, this project takes us places that we don\u2019t normally get to experience, offering fresh perspectives on Tokyo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Screening of documentary about the Future Tokyo Sports Day event that marked the opening of CCBT in October 2022<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Future Tokyo Sports Day was held in October as CCBT\u2019s opening event. Featuring two hundred people of all ages, participants co-created new types of sports competitions, tools, and game rules that proactively incorporated technology, culminating in a unique kind of sports day event in Tokyo. Following the project closely from the workshops through to the final event, this documentary will premiere at a special public screening at CCBT.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

CCBT artist fellows Tokolo Asao, Hiramoto Tomoki, and Iguchi Kota will present a new installation. The latest work by these three designers who contributed to the much-discussed drone display at the opening ceremony for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, FORMING SPHERES uses 3D printers to reconfigure Tokolo\u2019s kumi-ichimatsu-mon<\/em> traditional checkered Japanese pattern from the Tokyo 2020 emblems as a spherical sculpture. When light is projected onto the sculpture, it transforms into an installation created through the interplay of light and shadow. Alongside the unveiling of the new work at Yebisu International Festival for Art & Alternative Visions 2023, CCBT will hold an exhibition introducing how FORMING SPHERES was made.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
