Around twenty selected participants take part in several days of lectures to acquire new ways of thinking, workshops for building skill sets, and collaborative group activities. During the camps, the general public are also able to attend talks and presentations of the results.

Exploring the theme of theater and technology, the ninth Future Ideations Camp follows last year’s seventh edition in partnering with the Performing Arts Festival: Autumn Meteorite Tokyo held annually in Ikebukuro, Tokyo. The playwright and Autumn Meteorite Tokyo artistic director Okada Toshiki serves as the camp director, joined by a wide-ranging team of instructors and facilitators including practitioners from the technology sector, all working closely with the participants.
The camp treats theater as a simulation device that conjures up an alternative reality (fiction) through the audience’s imagination, enabling us temporarily to share and test situations and relationships that do not yet exist.
Once we regard digital technology and other modern technologies as tools for expanding the human imagination, what are the implications for our understanding of the nature of theater and society? And what new possibilities can we then conceive? The camp and its participants explore practice-based approaches to this inquiry.

Reference: Future Ideations Camp Vol.7｜Super Sober Shamanism : Exploring Synchronization, Co-presence, and Mimesis through Theatre and Technology

Reference: Future Ideations Camp Vol.7｜Super Sober Shamanism : Exploring Synchronization, Co-presence, and Mimesis through Theatre and Technology

Concept

Theater is a very old medium, practiced for thousands of years. Civic Creative Base Tokyo (CCBT) ’s Future Ideations Camp is a series of intensive workshops bringing different kinds of people together to work collaboratively and creatively with art and digital technologies. The camp treats theater as a simulation device that conjures up an alternative reality (fiction) through the audience’s imagination, enabling us temporarily to share and test situations and relationships that do not yet exist.Once we regard digital technology and other modern technologies as tools for expanding the human imagination, what are the implications for our understanding of the nature of theater and society? And what new possibilities can we then conceive? The camp and its participants explore practice-based approaches to this inquiry. Concept Theater is a very old medium, practiced for thousands of years. However, new technologies that did not exist millennia ago can naturally become the elements, perhaps even essential elements, that constitute theater. How can we incorporate modern technology (digital technology, for instance) into theater to bring about its essential innovation? How can theater utilize technology in new, previously not possible ways without compromising, and rather even enhancing, its essential qualities? This camp focuses on theater as a medium that excels at producing fiction through the heavy involvement of the audience’s imagination. Can the theatrical imagination enhanced by current technology have greater potential to perceive, creatively critique, and transform contemporary society? Sure it can! Simply utilizing new technology does not make a new form of theater. To reveal, through new technologies, the potential of theater that people thousands of years ago could never have imagined, yet doubtlessly sensed vaguely. Therein lies the ambition of this camp. The theatrical imagination is intertwined with society. This is something powerfully realized through new technology. As such, it is indeed a new form of theater: with the dream of witnessing that nascent moment of theater, this camp is once again held as a collaboration between CCBT and Autumn Meteorite Tokyo.
